Counselling the Afflicted and the Bereaved Families

Before I came to the United States of America in 2004, I lived in a small town known as Kisumu, this town has one of the highest rate of people living with HIV/AIDS. I handled some projects in creating AIDS awareness and also handled a 1 hour story time for the children who came to my house every evening 7 days a week at 5-6pm.  One evening when the children came one of the resource youth George passed by my house he looked very sad and tired, I asked him if all was well he responded all is not very well.  He told me his mother was very sick at New Nyanza Hospital, I told him I would pray for her then go to see her the following day since the children were coming for their story hour. I went to prepare for him something to eat and I decided to go see his mother right way. I asked my last born son Emmanuel who was just 10 years old to stay with his friends as I rushed out to visit this sick mother.

When we arrived we found George’s younger brother and younger sister standing by the bed looking at the sick mother. She looked at me, looked at her son George who was jobless and sickly yet the oldest; this mother was a widow who struggled to educate George and the other 7 siblings. After about 5 minutes of our arrival,  I requested the family to hold hands and form a circle as I delivered a short prayer, by the time we said Amen this poor widow took her last breath.

This was a challenge for George, I assisted him in coordinating with his local church elders and the church Pastor and we managed raise funds for the  orphans to have a burial for their late mother. After that I assisted them with rent for over a year and a half until one of the brothers got a part time job.  George is a sickle cell patient who from time to time needs medication and financial support which I have been providing whenever funds are available.
