Various passages in the Bible speak about signs that are said to indicate the approach of the end times. It’s important to note that interpretations of these verses can vary widely, and some individuals or groups may emphasize certain signs over others. Here are some signs as described in the New Testament, particularly in the books of Matthew, Revelation, and others:
- Wars and rumors of wars: The book of Matthew 24:6 says, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.”
- Famines and earthquakes: Matthew 24:7 reads, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.”
- False prophets and deception: Matthew 24:24 warns, “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”
- Increase in wickedness and love growing cold: Matthew 24:12 states, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.”
- The gospel being preached to the whole world: According to Matthew 24:14, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
- Persecution of Christians: Matthew 24:9 reads, “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.”
- Signs in the heavens: Luke 21:25 notes, “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.”
- The mark of the beast: Revelation 13:16-17 says, “It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.”
These are some of the signs mentioned in the New Testament regarding the end of the world. However, it’s important to remember that many of these verses and passages are highly symbolic and have been interpreted in numerous ways throughout history. The book of Revelation, in particular, is known for its complex and symbolic imagery. It’s also crucial to note that according to Matthew 24:36, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” The exact timing of these events remains unknown, according to the biblical text.
